Starter Kits
Everything to start Japanese black pines from seed: seeds, a coir pellet set, bonsai soil and a small unglazed pot. A slow, rewarding first project for the patient.

Bonsai Trees
Portulacaria afra, a succulent with red-brown stems and tiny round leaves. It stores water in its leaves, so it forgives the odd missed watering on a sunny windowsill.

Starter Kits
A two-year-old sapling in a plain nursery pot, ready for you to choose its front, first cuts and wiring. Pick the species that suits where you live.

Tools & Care
Three rolls of anodised aluminium training wire in 1.5, 2.5 and 3.5 mm. Soft enough to bend by hand, firm enough to hold a branch in place.

Pots & Trays
A classic oval pot in unglazed brown stoneware, the traditional home for junipers and pines. Two drainage holes and a pair of wire holes.

Bonsai Trees
A Japanese garden juniper, about five years old, with a gently curved trunk and dense blue-green pads. Junipers live outdoors: give it full sun and water when the top of the soil feels dry.

Tools & Care
Long-handled carbon steel shears with large finger loops, for trimming twigs and leaves without crushing them. Wipe dry and oil after use.

Bonsai Trees
A ficus with a thick, rounded root trunk and glossy green leaves. One of the easiest bonsai to keep indoors: bright light, no cold draughts, and water when the soil starts to dry.
